I co-wrote this song with Canadian children's music icon, Fred Penner and Rae Ellen Bodie. In a roundabout way, it turned into a kind of sequel to The Cat Came Back, though I say this with utmost reverence to TCCB, a children's classic.
lyrics
The Very Next Day
You may have heard the story of the Cat Came Back
About a feral feline who lived out in a shack
He seemed to live a quiet life, basking in the sun
Little did he know that his life had just begun
He had dreams of being on the stage, loving every gig
Sure enough as time went by the Cat would make it big
Then he became reclusive, very little would he say
But Rumour had it he’d come back the very next day
The very next day. The very next day.
We heard it might happen the very next day.
So they threw a great big party—you know what I mean
Animals of every shape and size would make the scene
Like a movie or a musical playing on Broadway
There was meowing, barking, howling from pedigree to stray
The Cat Came Back – the rumours were all true
He slid out of the limo, grinning right on cue
Glowing like a Persian Prince, whiskers to his toes
He wore a white tuxedo, with a single red rose
Suddenly a cloud of smoke…a brilliant flash of light
The Cat simply disappeared, vanished in the night
Maybe this is what he planned his whole life long
His name is now a legend every time we sing the song
The very next day. The very next day.
We heard it might happen the very next day. X2
Fred was there at the beginning, of that you can be sure
Now The song and the story forever will endure
Every single one of us can make a dream come true
The Cat will keep on coming back, coming back to you
